If there’s one thing we’re positive about, it’s that a great rug can completely transform your home! And the right indoor rugs do more than just tie a room together, they ground the space, add warmth, and tell your design story. But with so many options (sizes, materials, patterns, and styles), choosing the perfect one can definitely feel a little overwhelming.
At Spaces in Bloom Designs, we love being able to add something like a special rug to a client’s home that not only looks beautiful but also makes sense for their lifestyle. So, whether you’re decorating a cozy bedroom, an open-concept living room, or a busy entryway, this guide is going to help you choose the right rug for every room and every purpose!
1. Get the Size Right (It’s Everything!)
When it comes to choosing rugs, size matters more than almost anything else. The biggest mistake we see homeowners make? Picking a rug that’s too small for the space. A rug that is too small can make even a beautiful room look disjointed or unfinished. Our rug size guide will help you get proportions right every time!
Living Room Rug Placement
For your living room, your rug should anchor your main seating area. You have two layout options:
Front legs on: The front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on the rug.
All legs on: The entire furniture set fits on the rug.
Both work beautifully, it just depends on the size of your space. A rug that’s too small can make your furniture look like it’s floating, while a larger one pulls the whole room together. The most common rug sizes for living rooms are 8x10, 9x12, and 10x14.
Pro tip: If your living room feels small or cluttered, go bigger. A larger rug can make your space feel more expansive and balanced.
Dining Room Rug Tips
The dining area is one of the trickiest spots for rug sizing, but there’s an easy rule: make sure the rug extends at least 24 inches past the table on all sides. That way, when chairs are pulled out, the legs stay on the rug. It keeps the look polished and prevents annoying snags when chairs catch the edges (that’s just the worst)!
For round tables, choose a round rug that’s proportionate, about 4 feet larger in diameter than the table itself. For rectangular tables, an 8x10 or 9x12 rug usually does the trick!
Bedroom Rug Placement
Rugs can completely change the feel of a bedroom, adding softness, texture, and warmth when you step out of bed in the morning. When planning bedroom rug placement, think about how you want the rug to frame the bed.
Avoid placing your nightstands on the rug. Instead, slide the rug about halfway under the bed so it starts just under your nightstands and extends out at least 24 inches on each side.
Here’s a quick reference:
King bed: 9x12 rug (run horizontally)
Queen bed: 8x10 rug
Full bed: 6x9 rug
If your room layout doesn’t allow for a large rug, you can also use two smaller rugs or runners on each side of the bed for a layered, balanced look!
Entryway Rugs
Your entryway rug is the first thing guests see when they step into your home, and it sets the tone for everything else. Look for durable materials that can handle moisture, dirt, and constant traffic. Flatweave rugs, wool blends, or washable rugs are excellent for this area and stick with low-pile rugs, so doors open easily. If your entryway is long and narrow, try a runner rug instead (we’ll get to those in a second)!
Runner Rugs
Runner rugs are the unsung heroes of home design! They add warmth, color, and comfort to hallways, kitchens, and even beside the bed. Beyond looks, they protect your floors and help reduce noise in high-traffic areas.
When choosing a runner, leave about 3 to 6 inches of exposed flooring on each side to create a balanced frame. In long hallways, you can even layer multiple runners end-to-end for a continuous look.
2. Choosing the Right Material
The next step? Finding the right material for your lifestyle. Material plays a huge role in durability, feel, and maintenance, so this choice can make or break your rug’s longevity and how easy it is to care for.
Wool and Natural Fibers:
Perfect for high-traffic areas. Wool rugs are soft, durable, and naturally stain-resistant, making them a timeless option for living rooms and bedrooms.Jute and Sisal:
These natural fibers add texture and warmth. They’re great for layering under patterned rugs or using in casual spaces like sunrooms or dining rooms.Performance Fibers (Polypropylene or PET):
If you have kids, pets, or just want a low-maintenance option, performance rugs are your new best friend. They’re durable, washable, and ideal for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
If you love the idea of washable rugs, these newer designs are perfect for kitchens, entryways, and family rooms, any place that needs both beauty and practicality.
3. Playing with Color and Pattern
Your rug is one of the biggest visual anchors in any room, so it’s worth being intentional with color and pattern choices!
Neutrals: A neutral rug acts as a calm foundation, especially if you want your furniture or artwork to take center stage. Think beige, taupe, cream, or gray.
Patterns: Perfect for hiding dirt and great for high-traffic spaces. They can also define open-concept layouts by subtly distinguishing one area from another.
Warm Tones: We’re loving the trend toward warm, earthy hues! Rich browns, rusts, and honey tones are everywhere right now (and will be in high demand through 2026). They instantly make a space feel cozy and lived-in.
4. Layout, Layering, and Flow
Rug placement isn’t just about size, it’s also about balance and flow.
Center it: Whether it’s a sofa, dining table, or bed, center the rug under your main furniture piece for visual harmony.
Leave space: Aim for 12 to 18 inches of visible flooring around the rug to frame the room beautifully.
Define areas: In open layouts, use multiple rugs to visually separate spaces (like the dining area and living area) without needing walls.
Layer for depth: Layer a patterned rug over a larger jute base for added texture and interest. It’s a designer-approved trick for a cozy, custom look.
5. Pulling It All Together
The best indoor rugs do more than just fill floor space, they elevate your home, make it more comfortable, and tell your story through texture and design!
When in doubt, go slightly larger, stick to timeless materials, and think about how each rug connects to the next in your home’s flow. Your rug should feel like an intentional part of the room, not an afterthought.
